Faculty Overview In 1625, Hugo Grotius (De Jure Belli ac Pacis) compared law with mathematics stating that, just as the proportionalities of numbers are unchangeable – even if there had not been anybody to really count them up or if there had not been any object to be counted up – law and justice encompass the idea of a proportionality independent of the actual exercise of justice.
In 1859, during the investiture of the first ruler of united Romania, Alexandru Ioan Cuza, Mihail Kogălniceanu delivered a speech that caught a glimpse of the tension between the governmental practices of that time and the acute need of justice, especially for the many and the defenceless: “The Constitution of 7(19) August marks a new era; and you, My Lord, are called upon to open it! So, be the man of this age, make so that the law replaces the arbitrary; make the law be strong; and you, My Lord, as a ruler, be good, be gentle! Be good especially to those to whom almost all the past rulers have been indifferent or bad...”
In 2010, the science of law has more cubic metres of texts than all the mathematics of the past two millennia and political-juridical practice is much too insensitive to the desperate calls of society for justice and humanity. The situation might seem a dead end. But let us trust the future generations of jurists and leaders; maybe they will not lack the rigour nor the generosity of fair justice – deprived of these things, society falls into barbarism.
