The Senate is the collective governing body of the University; it is constituted based on the principle of minimal representation and on the principle of the proportionate representation of faculties and departments. The President of the Senate is the Rector and he ensures that the Senate’s decisions are properly executed.

The University Senate has the following responsibilities:

• Adopts the University Charter and Regulations, after they are discussed in public debates and approved by the vote of the academic community, and it decides to revise and amend them through the same procedure that involves the preliminary intervention of the academic community;

• Approves the programs of study and curricula proposed by the faculties and submits them to the certification of the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports;

• Validates the election of all the governing bodies, from the chair and faculty level to the rectorate;

• Sends to the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports and to ARACIS the propositions to create new faculties / specialisations / colleges and disposes that the procedures of authorisation and accreditation be properly met;

• Validates the results of the selection procedures organised to hire tutors, teaching assistants, and lecturers;

• Validates the results of the selection procedures organised to hire readers and professors and submits them to the certification of the National Council for the Confirmation of Scientific Titles, and University Degrees and Certificates;

• Approves the awarding of the titles of Associate Professor, Doctor Honoris Causa, Honorific Senate Member, Professor Emeritus and Honorific Professor;

• Proposes to the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth, and Sports the awarding of the title of Doctor and of the corresponding merits;

• Validates the propositions of faculties to maintain in activity some of the teachers who are beyond the retirement age;

• Approves the propositions of the Faculty Councils regarding doctorate coordinators and submits them to the certification of the National Council for the Confirmation of Scientific Titles, and University Degrees and Certificates;

• Accepts donations and benefactions;

• Adopts the decisions related to the withdrawal of the quality of academic community member, according to the laws in force;

• Approves the Strategic Development Plan of the University, based on the plans prepared by the faculties and summarized by the Senate Board.
